Gone are the days of the “shoulds” and “oughtas” of wedding traditions. Brides are now more than ever expanding their horizons, incorporating elements of their personalities and passions into their wedding styles. As a result, not only decor experts, but photographers and videographers have been challenged to go beyond the norm and explore innovative new concepts to best capture and express their client’s love. In this article, I will introduce to you the top trends and innovations created and articulated by the industry’s top wedding photographers and videographers.
Going green is not only a responsible thing to do; it makes a statement about your commitment to your sweetie as well as the wellbeing of your future generations. With so many options out there, you can now go green without sacrificing style. A number of today’s top wedding photographers have made the transition to shooting exclusively in digital. Not only does this have its advantages in terms of photo editing and product turnaround time, but, since no film is used, there’s no need for photo labs to use dangerous chemicals in the processing of your images.
Now this is all wonderful, but many brides still love the natural and timeless look of film photography. What is a trendsetting bride to do? Anna Costa from Michael and Anna Costa Photography suggests hiring a hybrid photographer - a photographer who shoots both digital and film images. This method offers brides the numerous benefits of digital, without sacrificing their desire for the timeless beauty of family portraits and emotional ceremony moments shot in film.
Whether you hire a digital, hybrid or film photographer, most are now offering online viewing galleries, which affords brides an economy of time and money. This enables busy brides as well as destination brides to pick and choose their favorite images to be printed without wasting resources on your less loved proofs.
Attasalina of Attasalina Photography has taken this concept a few steps further. “One of the new things that I’m doing is online album slideshows” which allows couples to “proof their album designs” as well as having the ability to share their actual album design and images with friends and family all over the world. Once the online album slideshow design is approved, it is then made into the hardcopy album of your choosing. “Couples also have the option of ordering the album slideshow on DVD for viewing on your TV or computer, “which makes a thoughtful and greener gift for parents!
From the green to the plain old fun, Nicol of Alyssa Nicol Photography is now offering fun and fabulous photography sets/booths for your wedding guests to enjoy. “Our photographers will work with either the coordinator and/or designer to create a corner in the wedding venue set up with professional lighting, which portrays the feeling of the wedding, not only through the architecture” but “through the design elements that each couple [selects].” Taking the relatively new concept of the photo guest book to a new level “guests will then be given two 4x6 prints” of their choosing- one the guests can take home, and the second “added into a guest book for the couple to receive.” In addition to providing gorgeous wedding photography and interactive photo booths and guest books, Nicol has established herself as a caring world citizen, through her commitment to donating 5% of each package booked to such non-profit organizations as Global Green, Save Darfur and KIVA.

As for trends in wedding video, the biggest new trend is that brides now truly appreciate the beauty and necessity of a finely-captured and edited wedding movie. No longer are couples waiting to see if funds are left in the budget for this once underutilized art, but are now booking their cinematographer/videographer within the first few months of getting engaged. As Joth Riggs of Whitestone Productions said, “In regards to production, most clients are coming to us as the experts, and giving us creative carte blanche to use our skills and experience to put together the most memorable production of their special day.”
Another must-have trend in wedding video is High Def. Joth continues “High Def has nearly twice the resolution of Standard Definition and is shot in a native widescreen format, giving you a much larger, clearer picture than ever before.” With twice the definition, you might be thinking that High Def might be “too good”, picking up on otherwise hidden flaws, but according to Joth Riggs, nothing could be further from the truth. “With the use of filters, just like what you would have in a magazine photo shoot, we actually make the bride look better with the added resolution, because we have more pixels to work with.”
An exciting advancement in high end wedding video production is the Same Day Edit. Though this concept is relatively new, Andrew Hsu of Studio MSV has been doing Same Day Edits (SDE’s) for over five years and pioneered it in the San Francisco Bay Area. Mr. Hsu explains “SDE’s are highlight movies of the day’s events, that can be shown at the reception the same day it happens.” An extremely exciting Same Day Edit option offered by Studio MSV is the “Video Souvenir.” Mr. Hsu continues “Brides have been offering music on CD’s or other prefabricated DVDs to their guests as favors or gifts. We are now offering our SDEs on DVDs for guests to take home.”
Another chic new trend is the multimedia experience. Jonathan Rubin of Studio Nine is on the forefront of the multimedia revolution -- offering his clients full service, multimedia wedding documentation through the use Artistic photography, cinematic HD video, as well as heirlooms and personal mementos, creating a new emotionally evocative experience for couples and their families. Rubin states, “Give us old family images, photos of you both as a couple through the years, video clips, old love letters, anything that can better tell your story. We will weave these “digital assets” into the fabric of the wedding itself, in both the album and the DVD, flashing back in time when the moment is just right.”
A fun new service being offered by a number of photographers and videographers is the iPod-formatted wedding movie, slideshow and multimedia experience. What could be better than sitting on an exotic beach, with your new husband, on your honeymoon, watching your Same Day Edit on your iPod! •

#21 LA FLEUR TABLE
Cover your entire table top with a single bold color of petals. Not
just a scattering, but the entire top of the table with a thick layer
of petals! You can purchase them at a farmers market or order them
through your florist. Place your chargers, place settings, glassware
and centerpieces in a contrasting color and lots of candles directly
onto the petals for a stunning, romantic look!

#31 FLORAL DECOR
No wedding is complete without flowers. Try updating the traditional
centerpiece by using masses of your favorite flowers in a variety of
complementary tones for added texture and interest. For instance, if
your bloom-of-choice is the gerbera daisy, try one centerpiece with
dozens of red gerberas, another with orange, and another with
fuchsia-colored bunches. Let your imagination run wild!

# 6 RECIPES FOR FAVORS
Gather together the favorite recipes that you remember as a child. They could be special family recipes, holiday menus, etc. Have them bound in small books, affix a wedding label on the front with your monogram and date that you were married. And there you have it, a unique favor that your guests will use again and again. Also, it is a wonderful way to acknowledge grandmothers and mothers.
