Every issue of Your Wedding Day Magazine dedicates a special section to the enhancement of lifestyle through the incorporation of current trends. Because the theme for this YWD issue was inspired by texture, delving into the rich tactile realm of specialty linens seemed like the perfect subject to pursue.
To accomplish this goal, I interviewed Youngsong Martin, a former fashion designer and innovator, and creator of the highly coveted Wildflower Linens . Her knowledge and innate passion for textiles are truly inspiring, and during our conversation, Youngsong shared her expertise as well as her invaluable insight into the process of selecting the ideal linen to suit your wedding theme and lifestyle.
Youngsong discussed several elements to consider when selecting the linen for your most special day. First, she discussed the importance of selecting linens with textures and elements that would be consistent with your wedding theme.
“If you are having a South Western theme, you would want to use linens with a more rustic and earthy texture, such as suede,” she advised. Similarly, if you’re having a garden theme, you would want to consider using a light and airy fabric such as organza, which has a texture reminiscent of delicate flower petals. Expanding on the idea of pairing theme with texture, Youngsong added, “If your inspiration is Buckingham Palace, go for really rich and opulent linens.”
Next, Youngsong addressed the choice of linens in accordance with the wedding venue. “Many brides express concern about their linens clashing with the carpet or surroundings of their chosen venue,” she said. |
“When you have 25 or so 72” round tables in a space, the color of your linen becomes the new dominant color, so rather than worry about matching, select a color that suits your theme as well as intensifies the beauty of your selected linen texture.” |
An additional tip concerned lighting, Youngsong explains that although texture, theme, and color are equally important elements when selecting your linen, it is vital to consider how your linens will be illuminated in order to maximize your desired effect.
“Natural fibers usually look best in natural light and the beauty of the more detailed linen textures is often enhanced by a bit of specialty lighting,” she said.
| She added that different textures simply require different lighting, and you should consult your coordinator or linen specialist for their expert advice. |
Youngsong concluded that there are thousands of linen texture combinations available, as many textures as there are wedding themes. However, she noted “If you can’t find the texture that perfectly suits your vision, Wildflower Linens can create custom linens just for you, and usually in about seven days.”
