BACARA RESORT AND SPA, SANTA BARABARA, CA

Louise and Scott met at a Super Bowl party in 2005, after Scott asked their mutual friend, “Who’s the beautiful girl?” The couple talked all evening. “We’ve basically been together ever since that night,” says Louise. She had just moved to Los Angeles from Denmark and Scott, having just remodeled, gave her his extra furniture, then asked her for a date. “We started dating the week we met and had our first kiss on the second night out.”

In Aspen for a New Year’s celebration, the couple was halfway down a ski slope overlooking the town and valley when Scott proposed. Louise says that the proposal was unexpected, but that, with a baby on the way, marriage had been on their minds.

“We didn’t want to do many of the traditional things associated with weddings,” Louise recalls. She and Scott wanted the wedding to be very intimate, so they invited only family members. “We wanted to make it into more of a vacation kind of wedding, so we put everybody up at Bacara Resort and Spa for Easter weekend.”
The ceremony was held at Bacara on a bluff overlooking the ocean, with rose pedals ringing the couple’s feet. Relatives shared thoughts on what makes a successful marriage, then Scott’s father, who obtained a license for the occasion, officiated as Louise and Scott recited personalized vows.
Louise, a former fashion designer, returned to Copenhagen to work with Gudnitz Couture to create her dress. “I wanted to show off my belly, which I loved and was very proud of, so we went with a body-shaped silk gown, with heavy handmade embroidery on top.” The bride’s shoes were from Dior and her bouquet was by Nico Designs of Santa Barbara.
Scott was in black Armani, a Robert Talbot shirt, and a striped XMI tie. His brother was his best man, and Louise’s brother was her best man.
The décor for the reception, held at Bacara’s Spa Café, featured vases of fresh white and pastel flowers. The menu included rosemary pesto lamb, garlic-crusted rib eye, chicken breast with an orange glaze, and lobster tail with garlic and herbs. Taittinger champagne was served, as well as wines from northern Italy, the Napa Valley, and South Australia.
The wedding cake had tiers of carrot cake with cream cheese filling and Valrhona chocolate génoise with vanilla bean cream.

Louise and Scott will honeymoon at a later date. For now, they’re busy enjoying their son, Thomas Alexander Eschelman, born August 9, 2006.

#26 MARRYING MINDFULLY
Creating the “perfect wedding” can easily overshadow what is really
important about getting married—creating a sacred and lifelong bond
with your beloved. Your wedding is not a “to-do” list. Take time to
tend to your relationship and to yourselves so that you enter into the
celebration relaxed, joyful, and with a full heart.

#16 COMFORTABLE RECEPTIONS
Reception spaces are taking on a comfort
theme nowadays. Rather than using cocktail tables alone, couples are
creating a lounge effect in their reception areas by adding cozy
furniture groupings of sofas and coffee tables, along with tenting and
draping, lamps and lanterns, lit up trees and dozens of candles. You
may want to hire a jazz quartet or flamenco trio to create a sultry
ambiance. Some couples are even hiring cigar rollers! You can also
use this set-up outdoors for a living room beneath the stars!

#11 QUICK FIX
Traveling with an emergency kit is like the American Express campaign, “Don’t leave home without it.” It should have everything from panty hose and nail glue to smelling salts and Tums, but the most commonly used item is SAFETY PINS! Although you should have a needle and thread, I have resorted to using safety pins for fixing hems on tuxedos, bustling the brides gown, pinning broken bra straps and creating a veil or headpiece out of tulle when the bride’s was left at home. Safety pins are great for a “quick fix.”
