The Cliffs Resort, Shell Beach, CA

Kristin and Matt met at Home Depot in San Luis Obispo where he worked and she was shopping. He offered to help her, and while talking they discovered they’d both just moved to the area. After she left the store he thought about her, then rushed out to the parking lot and asked her for a date. Fortunately, she said yes.

Two and a half years later, Matt proposed in San Simeon. After talking Kristin in to following him down an overgrown path she was convinced would lead nowhere, they emerged at a beautiful rocky beach. She stood up on a rock, and told Matt how nice the sunny day was, considering that it had been raining earlier. Kristin recalls, “I told him I couldn’t believe how perfect the day turned out to be.”
Then Matt got down on one knee. “That was difficult” Kristin says, “since I was standing on a rock with the waves crashing against it.” Then Matt told her, “The day would be more perfect if you would be my wife.”

Kristin and Matt chose a simple outdoor setting, with the pastor of their church focusing on a Bible passage about how God’s love is perfect, which set the tone for the entire day. For the ceremony, Kristin wore a gown from Lazaro, New York, a diamond white A-line silk satin strapless with a jeweled crystal belt at the waistline, inverted pleats at the side and a chapel train. She also wore her grandmother’s graduated pearls, a gift at her grandmother’s thirtieth wedding anniversary. Matt wore a black pin-stripe tuxedo with a white vest and white tie.
They wanted a simple, yet elegant reception too, and held it under a white tent overlooking the ocean. “I was going for a very timeless and elegant look,” Kristin said, “but I also wanted warm colors to keep the atmosphere cheerful.”
To that end, the color theme focal point was a narrow copper container down the center of the head table, filled with orange roses and orchids. For a nautical touch, porcelain votives in urchin, starfish, and nautilus shapes were used to produce warm light. Guests received a starfish with their names attached for the seating assignment.
The reception dinner, catered by The Cliffs, included Dungeness Crab Cake and Petite Filet Mignon & Shrimp Scampi with Mediterranean Vegetables & Roast Fingerling Potatoes

Kristin and Matt honeymooned in overwater bungalows at the Moorea Pearl Resort and Le Meridien in Bora Bora.

#16 COMFORTABLE RECEPTIONS
Reception spaces are taking on a comfort
theme nowadays. Rather than using cocktail tables alone, couples are
creating a lounge effect in their reception areas by adding cozy
furniture groupings of sofas and coffee tables, along with tenting and
draping, lamps and lanterns, lit up trees and dozens of candles. You
may want to hire a jazz quartet or flamenco trio to create a sultry
ambiance. Some couples are even hiring cigar rollers! You can also
use this set-up outdoors for a living room beneath the stars!

#11 QUICK FIX
Traveling with an emergency kit is like the American Express campaign, “Don’t leave home without it.” It should have everything from panty hose and nail glue to smelling salts and Tums, but the most commonly used item is SAFETY PINS! Although you should have a needle and thread, I have resorted to using safety pins for fixing hems on tuxedos, bustling the brides gown, pinning broken bra straps and creating a veil or headpiece out of tulle when the bride’s was left at home. Safety pins are great for a “quick fix.”

#26 MARRYING MINDFULLY
Creating the “perfect wedding” can easily overshadow what is really
important about getting married—creating a sacred and lifelong bond
with your beloved. Your wedding is not a “to-do” list. Take time to
tend to your relationship and to yourselves so that you enter into the
celebration relaxed, joyful, and with a full heart.
