Mission San Juan Bautista
and San Juan Oaks Golf Club

Ingrid and Edward knew each other through mutual friends in their Northern California community for years before really becoming acquainted. It was not until Edward joined, then unexpectedly left a church group Ingrid was attending that they got in touch. Ingrid says she was “bummed” when he left and she couldn’t figure out why. She did know she wanted to contact him, though, and a few weeks later she called. “I just knew I wanted to talk to him,” she reminisces. He asked her out on the first of their many dates, and Ingrid recalls then turning the situation over to her strong Filipino Catholic faith. “We were slowly but surely finding out what God and Love had in store for us.”
But three years later, Edward was asked to manage his company’s plant for a year, and he relocated to Massachusetts. “Instead of five minutes away – he was 3000 miles away!” Ingrid says.

Ten months later, Edward had a surprise: he would return to California early. When Ingrid flew to
Boston to help him pack, there was one more surprise. After asking her to take a walk on the Charles River Bridge, he stopped mid-way and dropped to one knee. “I don’t just want to come home – I want to come home to you,” he told her. Although the proposal was real, the ring was fake! He wanted Ingrid to pick out her own, perfect ring.

The couple incorporated Filipino customs into their ceremony with traditional candle lighting, representing new life together; the veil covering both their heads, representing unity; and the figure eight cord atop the veil, representing the bond. Ingrid, who says she’s “old fashioned,” chose a Pronovias design gown reflecting their traditions too. “Since we both come from strong Filipino Catholic backgrounds, and we were marrying at the Spanish mission, I also wanted my gown to go with the ‘old world’ atmosphere.” Edward chose a Nordstrom tuxedo and antique-white shirt, tie, and vest.
The décor for their reception, at the San Juan Oaks Golf Course high on a country hill, was in avocado, chocolate, and deep reds. They chose California wines, Bernardus, Monterey Chardonnay and J. Lohr, Paso Robles, Cabernet.
The cake was a highlight, as Ingrid and Edward are self-described dessert connoisseurs. “We know our cake!” Ingrid says. They chose a four-tier chocolate with chocolate hazelnut filling and toasted almond flavoring.
The Hiyas Philippine Folk Dance Company and Jeff Bado dancers performed Filipino folk dances. Their dances portrayed Filipino history from the Spanish influence to the very early Muslim traditions of ancient Filipinos.

The couple stayed at the Gilroy Hilton Garden Inn that night, then honeymooned at Sandals Regency, La Toc St. Lucia.
