Ritz Carlton, Marina del Rey CA

Caroline and Ritu met at a gym in Beverly Hills where Caroline was a trainer, just around the corner from the hospital where Ritu worked. They became good friends, then started dating several months later. When Ritu moved to New York for his fellowship in plastic surgery, the two realized they wanted to be more than friends.

Four months later, Ritu proposed. Caroline, still living in Los Angeles, was on her way home to Sweden for Christmas and stopped in New York to see Ritu. After dinner at an Italian restaurant, Ritu said he wanted to go home early. Once there he held both hands behind his back and asked Caroline to choose one. When she did, he said, “no the other one.” Caroline laughs, “Then he handed me the biggest peanut butter cup ever made!” But he showed her the other hand, then, in which he had a brilliant-cut diamond ring.

Caroline, who is Swedish, and Ritu, East Indian, had decided on a Hindu wedding, and so the festivities began several days before the actual wedding. First, there was the day of prayers, Kirtan chanting, and home-cooked Indian food for family and close friends. The next day, was Sangeet, a festive dance and music party for 75 guests. Then it was the Mehendi ceremony during which Caroline had the traditional henna symbols applied to her hands, feet, and legs. At the pre-ceremony tea party, Sera was performed for Ritu to prepare him for the wedding.
For the ceremony, Caroline donned a traditional Indian lengha in burgundy with gold embroidery by Indian couture designer, Ritu Kumar. Her jewelry included the mungal sutra, a symbol of marriage from her husband, a gold necklace and earrings with black pearls. She also received a pearl necklace from Ritu’s grandmother.
For the reception, Caroline changed into a green lengha embroidered with silver and semi-precious stones. Ritu’s attire included the traditional long Neru jacket and matching pants in cream and gold embroidery, Indian embroidered shoes, and a turban, representing the responsibility of a married man.

The couple stayed at the Ritz-Carlton, Marina Del Rey, on their wedding night. They have postponed their honeymoon, possibly a surf trip to Mexico, until Ritu completes his fellowship.
