spring08_modern3.jpgLinnae Asiel and Jonathan Michael of Asiel Design, with offices in San Jose, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Beverly Hills, were inspired by more than one theme when they created their event design “Modern Sensuality.” It represented the merging of two worlds or ideas into one piece.  “Masculine, modern, black or dark, and sculptural, with bold vases, clean lines, and pavé,” they convey, “And then the feminine: soft, sensual, sophisticated, bright, vintage, and glamourous.”

The design process began with shape. “We started with geometric shapes such as circles and squares and then built outward, trying to create something original,” Linnae and Jonathan explain. “We reinvented the topiaries using fruit and cuffs of fur on lace. We were inspired by the topiaries, because they’re usually seen as ivy topiaries and we wanted to create our geometric shapes.” Once they achieved the modern feel they were seeking, the two incorporated a touch of sensuality by introducing lace, fur, jewels, curvaceous vases, and other appointments.

Wildflower Linen enhanced the theme with custom-created table linens. “Wildflower mirrored the theme with their jewels dangling in the corners of each pleat and the perfectly spaced diamonds placed on top of the linen,” Linnae and Jonathan comment. They point out that Wildflower’s couture jeweled linens and custom chair covers, along with their own use of fabrics such as lace on the pedestals, fur, and satin, helped create romance for the event design.

The repetition of colors and flowers also helped create the mood. spring08_modern4.jpgThe flowers were in bold colors, with clean, smooth petals, and some fruits were used as flowers too.

Linnae and Jonathan also felt that lighting was important. “Enhanced lighting created fabric walls that softened the edges of a bold piece,” they explain. “With the yellow lighting on the fabric walls, everything became more sensual and soft whereas it started out bold. The splash of color completed the mood and played a vital role.”

To add to their design, Classic Party Rentals was called upon to provide a square table to balance the topiaries, and the tableware included china in a retro modern polka dot pattern. The stemware chosen was in a bold and masculine modern geometric shape, and swirl-pattern flatware was selected.

Tips
  • #16 COMFORTABLE RECEPTIONS
Reception spaces are taking on a comfort theme nowadays. Rather than using cocktail tables alone, couples are creating a lounge effect in their reception areas by adding cozy furniture groupings of sofas and coffee tables, along with tenting and draping, lamps and lanterns, lit up trees and dozens of candles. You may want to hire a jazz quartet or flamenco trio to create a sultry ambiance.  Some couples are even hiring cigar rollers!  You can also use this set-up outdoors for a living room beneath the stars!

  • #11 QUICK FIX
Traveling with an emergency kit is like the American Express campaign, “Don’t leave home without it.” It should have everything from panty hose and nail glue to smelling salts and Tums, but the most commonly used item is SAFETY PINS!  Although you should have a needle and thread, I have resorted to using safety pins for fixing hems on tuxedos, bustling the brides gown, pinning broken bra straps and creating a veil or headpiece out of tulle when the bride’s was left at home.  Safety pins are great for a “quick fix.”

  • #21 LA FLEUR TABLE
Cover your entire table top with a single bold color of petals. Not just a scattering, but the entire top of the table with a thick layer of petals! You can purchase them at a farmers market or order them through your florist. Place your chargers, place settings, glassware and centerpieces in a contrasting color and lots of candles directly onto the petals for a stunning, romantic look!
