Have you ever said, “Oh, I wish I would have thought of that?” Well, I’m saying that now. It’s not since the invention of the light bulb that there has been such an amazing product to shed new brightness on what’s possible for wedding and special event decor.  Printed VelonTM, a vinyl fabric made of recycled plastic, is going to change the face of event design as we know it – and help the environment while doing it.

The “Thomas Edison” of this new product, premier San Francisco event designer Robert Fountain of Robert Fountain Designs , has taken this vinyl material that’s been around forever and turned it into something chic – a design tool capable of giving any event a high-end designer-look at a fraction of the cost.  What once was only in solid colors and used to cover unsightly objects like canopy poles now comes in endless colors, patterns and can be customized at a drop of a hat – giving us the functionality of a high-end textile, but with massive versatility.

Printed VelonTM can drape virtually anything from 10,000 square foot tents to draping 65,000 square foot ballrooms, to upholstering button-tufted wall panels, covering seat cushions, enhancing the look of the bar, buffet, and captain stations – imagine the same white tent splashed with any design, pattern or logo of your choice. You can even give a “Prada-look” to the oh-so-necessary-but-not-stylish trashcan.   Of course, you can do this with traditional fabric, that is, if you have a considerable budget. But with Printed VelonTM, you can achieve a customized look for nearly a fifth of the cost ($3.72 a yard compared to $20 per yard for a higher-end fabric); while also making an eco-friendly choice being it is printed in the US with environmental friendly inks, it is 100% recycled post-event, and it does not need the harsh chemicals required to flameproof fabrics, meeting all fire code regulations for all 50 states. Robert says, in his Southern-hospitable Georgian-way, “Let there be no more white tents in the world of events. With Printed VelonTM, you can get the feel of fabric, the look of fabric, just not the negative costs associated to using fabric or the environmental concerns.....white tent, be gone!”

It was seven years ago, in the midst of designing for the San Francisco Symphony and Opera that the “ah-ha” moment occurred for Robert, “It was the thirtieth time I had to go through the solid colors that I thought....and why can’t we print on this?” Today, there are upwards of 300 different patterns within their in-stock collections which can be color-matched to any Pantone color in the world; or you can have your very own pattern customized.  “They can send us a swatch of fabric, wallpaper sample, image from a magazine; it is unlimited to what we can match,” Robert shares enthusiastically.  The “Robert Fountain Collection” is focused towards the bridal and event industry with patterns particularly design to represent today’s trends. The newest of his collections is “Crystal Velon” which has a completely different usage – it is translucent, a see-through velon allowing the pattern to be the primary focus, and has the ability to cling like a Saran Wrap to glass windows, tabletops, mirrors, glass cylinder vases, to the back-and-seat of the Ghost Chair, to any plexi-surface, and is stunning when used to line a clear tent!

To view and experience this extensive library, all one needs to do is log onto velondesigns.com, it provides the ability to mix and match, coordinate different patterns as well as colors, and provides the ability to order which any event designer, event production company, or tenting company will know how to design with and install. And knowing that the turnaround time is only two-to-three weeks, makes this an even dreamier product from an industry perspective, “The beauty is that this product is available to access in any stage of the design process!” states Robert.

Already awarded the “Best New Innovative Event Product” by Special Events Magazine, the “Best New Product” by BizBash Magazine, and the “Best Industry Innovation” by ISES (International Special Events Society), I imagine your saying to yourself at this very moment, “yeah, I wish I would have thought of that first too!” Clearly, when the light bulb went off in Robert’s head, he was onto something.  “I’m so glad to have been able to create a product for designers to be able to do what they want.... to be able to create a creative-edge affordably.....a product that makes us better designer and producers!”
