Wildflower Linen

Youngsong Martin, owner of Wildflower Linen, shares with Your Wedding Day that she actually began her career as a fashion designer but after attending several high-profile events, her fashion design career took a different turn. “I was surprised that although tables and chairs comprised the bulk of a room’s décor, not much thought went into how they were dressed.” It appeared to Youngsong that these tables and chairs where “stuck in a time warp,” not progressing at the same rate as other fashion and textile industries. Seeking to fill that void, in 2001, Youngsong opened Wildflower Linen, offering a line of couture table linens and chair covers to an excited public. “I wanted to offer more fashionable tabletop looks to a market that was clearly ready for this,” she said.

To develop her creations, Youngsong begins with her fashion training but more importantly, she draws from her inspiration of many things, or rather, thousands of things. We concluded after taking note of an extensive list of places, people and things, that Youngsong is an endless source for inspiration. She explains, “Many things capture my attention,” she said, “such as runway trends, the colors in nature and even people. Princess Diana and Madonna, these fashion icons, inspired me to create a line of chair covers for each. ” Youngsong also keeps a keen eye turned towards the entertainment industry,

Modern Sensuality

“As film and fashion began to look to the East,” Youngsong explained, “I released a collection of linen featuring the colors of India with rich saffron, fuchsia and teal.”  For a winter collection, she highlighted suede-like fabrics accented with grommets and the hardware “look” from the Parisian runway. Each year, Wildflower Linen releases several new collections of exquisite linen inspired by Youngsong’s endless talent.

As our curiosity got the better of us during this interview, we had to ask, “How do your ideas transcend from your initial inspiration to the actual table?” Youngsong confides, “I love taking an idea for a linen from my imagination and making it happen.” She continues, “When a wedding planner or client request a design, perhaps let’s say they are looking for the feeling of ancient Rome. I envision much like what a set designer would. I imagine myself back in that period of time, I begin to see the homes of the people, how they live, what their parties are like, then I turn my focus towards the fabrics, the textures, and the colors.” Once Youngsong has mastered her vision, she takes the design to her team. “They are always able to understand my vision and produce it,” she said. Finally, out of her vision and ability to actually “place herself” in any given location, comes the final product. “From that inspiration,” Youngsong said, “I will release both a custom, signature cloth, and then extend the look into a series of looks, colors and fabrics.”

Youngsong’s exceptional design abilities have gained her not only accolades from her clients worldwide, but in other arenas too.  In 2008, Wildflower was asked to provide the linen for the Academy Awards Governor’s Ball. Wildflower Linen has also been invited to participate in ABC’s “Extreme Wedding Makeover Wedding.”

“But in addition to the accolades we’ve received,” Youngsong shares with us, “it’s been very important that we make a stand for the environment. To that end, we have researched the most stable natural dyes that will uphold well, the most sustainable fibers as well as how we wash and treat them. Our industrial-size laundry we just installed features recycled water and bio-degradable cleansers.”

Not only does Wildflower Linen provide a custom look with haute couture cloths, they also provide an equally beautiful and extensive line of exquisite linens carried in stock.  Youngsong expands, “It’s all about putting them together in such a way with overlays, underlays, chair covers, sashes and more – that create a truly special look.”

You can actually experience these linens by visiting one of their many showrooms located at the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles; their design studio in San Francisco and Orange County; and soon to open in 2009, you can experience Wildflower Linen in New York, and Las Vegas. “It’s a tactile experience that will be felt by all of your  guests, so it’s important to be able to sit with us, talk about and play with the multitude of looks possible for you,” concludes Youngsong.

By joining the Wildflower Linen team at one of their beautiful and relaxing showrooms, you will enter the world of where “fashion and couture” for your bridal gown, will transcend to fashion-forward thinking for your couture tabletop too.

Tips
  • #16 COMFORTABLE RECEPTIONS
Reception spaces are taking on a comfort theme nowadays. Rather than using cocktail tables alone, couples are creating a lounge effect in their reception areas by adding cozy furniture groupings of sofas and coffee tables, along with tenting and draping, lamps and lanterns, lit up trees and dozens of candles. You may want to hire a jazz quartet or flamenco trio to create a sultry ambiance.  Some couples are even hiring cigar rollers!  You can also use this set-up outdoors for a living room beneath the stars!

  • #21 LA FLEUR TABLE
Cover your entire table top with a single bold color of petals. Not just a scattering, but the entire top of the table with a thick layer of petals! You can purchase them at a farmers market or order them through your florist. Place your chargers, place settings, glassware and centerpieces in a contrasting color and lots of candles directly onto the petals for a stunning, romantic look!

  • #11 QUICK FIX
Traveling with an emergency kit is like the American Express campaign, “Don’t leave home without it.” It should have everything from panty hose and nail glue to smelling salts and Tums, but the most commonly used item is SAFETY PINS!  Although you should have a needle and thread, I have resorted to using safety pins for fixing hems on tuxedos, bustling the brides gown, pinning broken bra straps and creating a veil or headpiece out of tulle when the bride’s was left at home.  Safety pins are great for a “quick fix.”
