The Ebell of Los Angeles, founded in 1894, is an official Los Angeles Cultural Monument; on the National Register of Historic Places; has been designated an Official American Treasure by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the White House Millennium Council. Some really marvelous reasons to choose The Ebell for your wedding! According to Melissa Allen, Director of Catering and Special Events, brides and grooms love this sense of history at the Ebell and they list many additional reasons for having an Ebell wedding too.
One reason would be the facility’s sense of glamour and intrigue. “The Ebell is a social, educational, and philanthropic organization founded by women in 1894,” Melissa explains, “and The Ebell Clubhouse and Wilshire Ebell Theater were built in 1927.” She says the facility has been a home to numerous special events and theatrical productions. “Judy Garland |

was discovered on the Wilshire Ebell stage by a talent scout from MGM,” Melissa says, “and Amelia Earhart gave her last public speech at The Ebell before her ill-fated flight around the world.” During WWII, The Ebell basement was used as an air-raid shelter and USO dances were held in the Solarium.
Melissa explains that couples are also enthralled by the Ebell’s Hollywood ties. “We are also a favorite location for Hollywood studios and can be seen in Wedding Crasher, Forrest Gump, Flags of Our Fathers, Bedtime Stories, Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Gilmore Girls, and House just to name a few,” she says. In addition, The Ebell has hosted the Grammy Foundation and The Recording Academy during Grammy Week, The Annual Environmental Media Association Awards, visiting dignitaries, and film premieres and wrap parties.
While the sense of history, vintage glamour, and the movies are key factors for some couples, many couples also select The Ebell because of the design. “There is a grandeur and elegance that is uncommon in modern facilities,” Melissa explains. The most obvious distinction, she believes, is the architecture. The Italian Renaissance design is the creation of renowned architect Sumner Hunt (also designer of the Southwest Museum and Bradbury Building) whose Ebell masterpiece includes a center courtyard garden, two distinctive ballrooms, an Art Salon, and second and third floor meeting rooms, a Solarium, and the 1200-seat Wilshire Ebell Theater. “One can quickly envision their wedding day taking place at The Ebell” Melissa says.
Sumner Hunt designed The Ebell with privacy in mind, and this is among the appealing factors for many couples. “Some couples are looking for a setting for their wedding that will be private and exclusively theirs for the evening,” Melissa says. “Unlike a hotel or public facility, The Ebell is a private club that can offer exclusive access to a bride and groom and their guests. That privacy and intimacy in a romantic setting, with distinguished design, delicious cuisine, and a stellar service staff, The Ebell is in a class all by itself.”
Concerning that “delicious cuisine,” Melissa says food is the reason some couples choose The Ebell. “We do have couples who consider themselves “foodies,” Melissa explains. “and they are very particular with the menu they want to serve.” They have come to the right place because The Ebell is home to accomplished culinarian Louis Pechan, Executive Chef, previously Chef de Cuisine at the award-winning Rockenwager and Executive Chef at Falcon. Melissa says, “Chef Pechan’s flair for the exotic complement his superlative talents in classical and innovative cuisine. He puts tremendous amounts of attention and care in crafting every menu he produces alongside his stellar culinary staff. He excels at crafting that just-right menu that is beyond the client’s already high expectations.”
The entire event staff exceeds each client’s expectations with this being yet another reason couples choose The Ebell, beginning with Melissa herself who arrived at Ebell with years of experience as an independent wedding consultant and planner. She has been an active member of the Association of Bridal Consultants since launching into the wedding industry in 2001 and has been chair and co-director of educational workshops for three years, still on the steering committee for the Greater Los Angeles Chapter. Melissa achieved the Cele Lalli Rising Star Award by ABC International in 2004 and has been a speaker at The Special Event Trade Show & Expo and ReVamp Vintage Emersion Classes on the topic of Vintage Weddings, her specialty.
Melissa gives a great deal of credit to The Ebell’s Special Events Representatives, Teddi Dysart and David Toves, too. Teddi and David know that care and attention to details makes a world of difference,” she says. “They personally guide and assist each bride and groom through the wedding planning process.”
Melissa says all of the members of the Special Events Staff at The Ebell find their inspiration from the couples they serve. “We love getting wrapped up in the excitement that wedding planning brings,” she explains. “We love brides and grooms that have a vision for their wedding day as being uniquely ‘them’ and to brainstorm ideas and achieve those little surprises and nuances that delight their guests is a real treat.”
Melissa says the event staff at Ebell loves wedding planners too! “We value their knowledge, we appreciate their service and we love collaborating with them to insure that every single detail is in place.”
One call is all it usually takes for couples to fall in love with The Ebell event staff too. “We’ve had couples that chose The Ebell from their first phone call, they feel like we genuinely cared about their event and that we would take good care of them,” Melissa says. She explains that the event staff take as much time needed to caringly review options, offer suggestions and work with the couple to develop an event to exactly fit what each couple desires. And, this caring staff will also not hesitate to provide a couple with other wedding venues, if The Ebell for some reason isn’t the couple’s perfect fit. “It’s all part of doing our best and offering solutions in whatever way we can. It may sound silly, but it’s true – we have a good time at our events in making sure our guests are having a good time!”
And now, Melissa has a special invitation for you. “Along with The Ebell Club legacy and the exciting Hollywood glamour, The Ebell of Los Angeles will be proud and honored to be a part of your special day, providing an intimate and elegant setting for your family and friends.”

#11 QUICK FIX
Traveling with an emergency kit is like the American Express campaign, “Don’t leave home without it.” It should have everything from panty hose and nail glue to smelling salts and Tums, but the most commonly used item is SAFETY PINS! Although you should have a needle and thread, I have resorted to using safety pins for fixing hems on tuxedos, bustling the brides gown, pinning broken bra straps and creating a veil or headpiece out of tulle when the bride’s was left at home. Safety pins are great for a “quick fix.”

#16 COMFORTABLE RECEPTIONS
Reception spaces are taking on a comfort
theme nowadays. Rather than using cocktail tables alone, couples are
creating a lounge effect in their reception areas by adding cozy
furniture groupings of sofas and coffee tables, along with tenting and
draping, lamps and lanterns, lit up trees and dozens of candles. You
may want to hire a jazz quartet or flamenco trio to create a sultry
ambiance. Some couples are even hiring cigar rollers! You can also
use this set-up outdoors for a living room beneath the stars!

# 6 RECIPES FOR FAVORS
Gather together the favorite recipes that you remember as a child. They could be special family recipes, holiday menus, etc. Have them bound in small books, affix a wedding label on the front with your monogram and date that you were married. And there you have it, a unique favor that your guests will use again and again. Also, it is a wonderful way to acknowledge grandmothers and mothers.
