The sound of a beautifully-played piano does something very special for
the human soul. Like an auditory spa visit, it's luxuriously relaxing,
stimulating and soothing all at once. Whether we're hearing
improvisation, or tunes that recall our childhood or significant
events, the piano is virtually everyone’s favorite instrument. Pianist
Fern Barishman offers wonderful accompaniment to a pre-ceremony
Cocktail Hour, Dinner Reception, or a Rehearsal Dinner.
A classically-trained musician who began playing at the age of seven,
Fern offers a vast repertoire ranging from the classic sounds of Cole
Porter to contemporary songwriters like Norah Jones. In between, you'll
even discover some Led Zeppelin favorites, too! When you consider the
vast generational ranges of wedding guests, Fern has it all covered
from Ragtime (turn of the last century) through the Great American
Songbook and Broadway, the Beatles, and both soft and hard rock. Fern
is impressively attuned to people’s emotions and tastes.

“The piano establishes such a sense of occasion," says Fern. "It’s a lovely formality, particularly while guests are dining. I truly feel that the right music can take you instantly back to a better place and time, while it helps to recall pleasant emotions. I like being able to provide virtually any type of music the couple and their guests ask of me.” Fern suggests a meeting with the couple personally in advance of the occasion, so she can listen and advise. If a couple requests a song Fern doesn't know, she'll learn it especially for them.
Fern’s 2,000-strong list of songs is her starting point. Perhaps that's why she was the highest scoring contestant on the entrance test for the popular TV show, Name That Tune! Fern says, “I love being able to survey the guests, measure the temperature in a room and deliver any number of songs that fit the mood instantly.”
There’s an attractive vitality that draws people to Fern. She has the sass and warmth of the ex-New Yorker she is. She worked in TV for many years in Los Angeles before settling in Ojai in 1992, and she won an Emmy for her work on the children's show, Hot Hero Sandwich. Fern is a popular entertainer at private parties and events all over Ventura, SB and Los Angeles Counties. She is a regular at the Pierpont in Ventura and The Topa Tower Club in Oxnard as well as other restaurants and nightclubs.
Fern's rates are affordable, and she is available to travel as well.

# 1 - LOUNGING ANYWHERE
Wonder what to do to a resort ballroom to make it more interesting and intimate? You can create individual lounge areas by renting tents of sheer flowing fabric and adding sofas and coffee tables with lots of candlelight in them. You’ve suddenly created that romantic lounge atmosphere in a standard ballroom and given it more intimacy. Your guests can move to different “rooms” during the cocktails hour or or they can dance the night away. Jill La Fleur, The Wedding Planner

#16 COMFORTABLE RECEPTIONS
Reception spaces are taking on a comfort
theme nowadays. Rather than using cocktail tables alone, couples are
creating a lounge effect in their reception areas by adding cozy
furniture groupings of sofas and coffee tables, along with tenting and
draping, lamps and lanterns, lit up trees and dozens of candles. You
may want to hire a jazz quartet or flamenco trio to create a sultry
ambiance. Some couples are even hiring cigar rollers! You can also
use this set-up outdoors for a living room beneath the stars!

# 6 RECIPES FOR FAVORS
Gather together the favorite recipes that you remember as a child. They could be special family recipes, holiday menus, etc. Have them bound in small books, affix a wedding label on the front with your monogram and date that you were married. And there you have it, a unique favor that your guests will use again and again. Also, it is a wonderful way to acknowledge grandmothers and mothers.
