Your Wedding Day Resources
Camilla Svensson Burns Couture Floral&Event Design

“Years ago, I had this romantic notion that one day I would have a bucket stand and peddle flowers,” Camilla Svensson Burns shared with us here at Your Wedding Day magazine. This idea appeared to her when she was living in London. “I would visit Pulbrook and Gould, a very exclusive flower shop in Knightsbridge. I loved going in on my lunch hours and would salivate over the displays and unusual flower selections.”

Ten years later, as a student in San Francisco studying Interior Design and Architecture, she began working for a flower shop bringing her earlier notion to reality. As fate would have it, she fell in love with and married a man whose mother is a floral designer. “I learned the fundamentals of floral design from my Mother-in-Law,” Camilla says, “a floral designer with her own business.”

Soon following, Camilla opened her own floral business. “My husband bought me a tiny little flower shop in Berkeley, CA where most of my clientele were students and only bought flowers by the stem,” she recalls. “But I slowly progressed into design work and weddings.”

Then, when a baby came along, the couple decided to relocate to the Central Coast. “I took some time off to be a full-time mother,” Camilla says, “all the while, doing research on the wedding market and planning my launch.”  She started off slowly, she says, because her priority was her family and their needs.

But once Camilla got going, developing Camilla Svensson Burns Couture Floral and Event Design, there was nothing slow about her progress.  She made the decision to become a full-service vendor, including prop rental and linen service, and to become personally involved in every aspect of designing a couple’s florals from start to finish. “I hand-pick their flowers at the Flower Market,” she explains, “and if I am inspired by something out of the ordinary, I will add this into the design. If the opportunity exists, I like to add whimsy and unusual elements that will make their wedding extra special, leaving an impact for the guests.”

Now, Camilla’s floral design has made an impact on everyone, including a London publishing company that approached her to write a book on silk floral design, which has since been published and is being requested worldwide.  We are pleased to say that among the efforts Camilla considers her most important accomplishments; she lists her contributions to various bridal magazines, including her frequent features in Your Wedding Day!

We asked Camilla what type of inspiration was behind her impeccable service and exciting, innovative work. “Some of my influences include Ariella Chezar, Colin Cowie and Ron Morgan, but I also draw a lot of inspiration from European décor magazines.” She says there are other sources of inspiration too, “I am inspired by how the industry has changed,” she says. “Today’s brides are more adventurous and willing to do something different. Most of my clients have destination weddings, so non-traditional settings and approaches to design are almost expected.”

When planning these non-traditional venues and design approaches, Camilla shares that being attentive to a couple’s needs and wishes is the key. “I think I am a good listener and am truly appreciative of what they want their wedding to express. When I present their proposal, I use a lot of detail with the aim of giving them a strong visualization of what their event will look like.”  We’ve also heard that her success is based on her willingness to be flexible and easy to work with, according to her clients and other vendors. A real plus! “I truly believe that teamwork is essential amongst all the vendors involved,” she said, “and our ultimate goal is to make the event a huge success for all.”

Camilla Svensson Burns Couture Floral and Event Design, is a huge success, and we just have to chuckle when we think about Camilla’s original romantic idea, “to have a bucket stand and peddle flowers.” Today, it takes hundreds of buckets and bunches of flowers to serve her steadily growing list of clients, from her base area, Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez and California’s greater Central Coast, on up through San Francisco and Napa/Sonoma.  And now, due to high demand for her services, she is quickly expanding her business into Los Angeles and the more southern areas of California too.

Concerning her creativity, Camilla says “It is really fun to produce an event that will be talked about afterwards because we got to bend the rules and play with the design.” With Camilla on your team, there is no doubt that your wedding florals will be talked about for years to come.

Tips
  • #16 COMFORTABLE RECEPTIONS
Reception spaces are taking on a comfort theme nowadays. Rather than using cocktail tables alone, couples are creating a lounge effect in their reception areas by adding cozy furniture groupings of sofas and coffee tables, along with tenting and draping, lamps and lanterns, lit up trees and dozens of candles. You may want to hire a jazz quartet or flamenco trio to create a sultry ambiance.  Some couples are even hiring cigar rollers!  You can also use this set-up outdoors for a living room beneath the stars!

  • #21 LA FLEUR TABLE
Cover your entire table top with a single bold color of petals. Not just a scattering, but the entire top of the table with a thick layer of petals! You can purchase them at a farmers market or order them through your florist. Place your chargers, place settings, glassware and centerpieces in a contrasting color and lots of candles directly onto the petals for a stunning, romantic look!

  • #11 QUICK FIX
Traveling with an emergency kit is like the American Express campaign, “Don’t leave home without it.” It should have everything from panty hose and nail glue to smelling salts and Tums, but the most commonly used item is SAFETY PINS!  Although you should have a needle and thread, I have resorted to using safety pins for fixing hems on tuxedos, bustling the brides gown, pinning broken bra straps and creating a veil or headpiece out of tulle when the bride’s was left at home.  Safety pins are great for a “quick fix.”
