Alyssa Nicol Photography

Alyssa Nicol, owner of Alyssa Nicol Photography, originally planned a career in photojournalism and documentary photography following her graduation from the Colorado Institute of Art. However, when a friend who had seen her portfolio of travel work asked Nicol to photograph her wedding, Nicol was quick to reconsider her original photography genre plans. She tells us at Your Wedding Day, “I had never thought of shooting weddings until I realized its relationship to the storytelling process as I had studied in school for documentary photography.”

Now years later, Nicol has found her photography career with weddings both inspiring and a challenge. “I find inspiration in being awakened to all possibilities of human interaction,” she says, “and challenged to be in the moment as it arises, as opposed to projecting ideas of beauty.” She further explains, “It is really inspiring to create energy among my couples so they feel the most natural and true to who they are, and in their expression towards each other.  It is in that moment, that a beautiful photograph is captured.”

When we asked Nicol her opinion concerning what motivates her clients in selecting her photography, she said she believed it had a lot to do with her diverse background, and fine art approach but also, “I make an effort to find out who the couple is, what they are about, and how they are choosing to create their wedding day.” This intimate connection between client and photographer allows Nicol’s images to express a unique style, of where her subjects feel comfortable, and relaxed which is the emotion a couple desires to feel on their wedding day.

These attributes have brought Nicol great success, both in the wedding photography arena and other accomplishments such as editorial with NBC, LA Weekly, and America Online; travel coverage in Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Nepal, India, Vietnam, Morocco, Kenya, and Belize; and Portrait Art for such notables as Director Robert Rodriguez and musicians Kelly Clarkson, Lyle Lovett, and John Legend.

But Nicol has much more to offer you in addition to exquisite wedding photos, so you’ll want to ask her about documentary photography, her photo booth service, hand-created photo cards, traditional/classic albums, and her book art.

For local weddings, or a destination wedding throughout the United States, or one of your favorite places, which may be one of Nicol’s favorite places, Europe and Africa, call Alyssa Nicol Photography. For you, our Your Wedding Day couples, Nicol says she will travel to the farthest ends of the earth!

Of course we are more than impressed, but there’s even more to tell.  In an effort to give back to the world she captures in print so beautifully, Nicol will donate 5% of the cost of your wedding photo package to a non-profit organization of your choice.

Tips
  • #26 MARRYING MINDFULLY
Creating the “perfect wedding” can easily overshadow what is really important about getting married—creating a sacred and lifelong bond with your beloved. Your wedding is not a “to-do” list. Take time to tend to your relationship and to yourselves so that you enter into the celebration relaxed, joyful, and with a full heart.

  • # 6  RECIPES FOR FAVORS
Gather together the favorite recipes that you remember as a child. They could be special family recipes, holiday menus, etc.  Have them bound in small books, affix a wedding label on the front with your monogram and date that you were married. And there you have it, a unique favor that your guests will use again and again. Also, it is a wonderful way to acknowledge grandmothers and mothers.

  • #11 QUICK FIX
Traveling with an emergency kit is like the American Express campaign, “Don’t leave home without it.” It should have everything from panty hose and nail glue to smelling salts and Tums, but the most commonly used item is SAFETY PINS!  Although you should have a needle and thread, I have resorted to using safety pins for fixing hems on tuxedos, bustling the brides gown, pinning broken bra straps and creating a veil or headpiece out of tulle when the bride’s was left at home.  Safety pins are great for a “quick fix.”
